This bill clarifies the status of protection orders issued on behalf of a minor so that the order remains in effect until the expiration date of the order even if the minor reaches the age of majority before the order terminates. This bill also provides that the Court may extend the order with the minor as the now plaintiff without having to restart the process. The lack of clarity around on behalf of orders have resulted in questions whether the order expires on the minor’s 18th birthday causing some judges to schedule extension hearings on the minor’s 18th birthday. It has also led to arguments that the order automatically expires on the minor’s 18th birthday.
