Student Government Day (SGD) is usually scheduled for the first Friday in April. SGD has been observed annually since it was signed into law in 1947 (M.G.L. Chapter 6, Section 12M). Under the auspices of the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education with major assistance of Senate and House staff, approximately 400 high school students participate in the program. All Massachusetts high schools are encouraged to conduct elections in the fall so that a student in their junior or senior year, along with an alternate student, will represent the school at SGD. The students are assigned roles and have the opportunity to replicate activities of Senators, Representatives, Supreme Court Justices or Constitutional Officers.
Interested students in grades 11 and 12 should contact their high school administration or the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for more details. Visit https://www.doe.mass.edu/scholarships/sgd/ for more information.
