This bill provides new transparency and oversight to the purchase of military weapons from federal agencies by local, county and state law enforcement. The types of weapons include assault rifles and mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles. Should a state law enforcement agency wish to receive such property, it would need to receive approval from the secretary of public safety and security, the secretary of energy and environmental affairs, or the secretary of transportation as appropriate. Should a local law enforcement agency wish to receive such property, it would need to receive approval from their local legislative body. Should a regional or multi-jurisdictional law enforcement body wish to receive such property, it would need to receive approval from the secretary of public safety and security. Should a sheriff’s department wish to receive such property, it would need to receive approval from the secretary of public safety and security.
