Bill Information

Presenter:
John J. Cronin
Status:
Referred to Senate Committee on Rules

The bill amends the definition of "physical therapy" within the General Laws to expand the scope of practice for physical therapists. Physical therapy is now recognized as a health profession rooted in scientific principles, focused on managing physical dysfunction and promoting overall health. The revised definition includes key aspects such as evaluation, prevention, treatment, and education pertaining to bodily systems, particularly neurological and musculoskeletal ones. It introduces the ability for physical therapists to administer and interpret diagnostic imaging and tests.

The bill broadens treatment options available to physical therapists to encompass therapeutic exercises, respiratory care, and the use of physical agents like heat and electricity. It authorizes physical therapists to directly recommend and prescribe durable medical equipment to patients.

Moreover, the bill empowers physical therapists to delegate certain treatments to physical therapist assistants and aides, while retaining accountability for patient care and supervision. Additionally, physical therapists are permitted to provide consultation services to health organizations, educational institutions, and community agencies, further integrating their role into broader healthcare and community contexts.
