Basic Service

Currently, utilities like Eversource and National Grid may enter into contracts for basic service electric supply for a period of up to 6 months. Conversely, contracts for electric service under municipal aggregation programs may be negotiated for longer periods and are commonly two to three years in length. Longer contract lengths provide consumers with predictable prices that are less susceptible to seasonal volatility. This bill would allow contracts for basic service to be negotiated for periods longer than six months, which may lead to more stable electricity rates for basic service customers.
