Bill Information

Presenter:
Cynthia Stone Creem
Status:
Referred to Senate Committee on Ways and Means
This bill would require the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education to issue guidelines for the implementation of social and emotional learning curricula in middle and high school athletic programs and to integrate the guidelines into the safe and supportive schools framework. School districts would be required to consider the guidelines if they elected to integrate social emotional learning into their athletic programs, but the bill would not mandate that they do so. Instead, the bill provides information and curricula so that school districts that are interested in improving their athletics programs and reducing bias incidents know how to get started. The bill would help the Commonwealth achieve its vision of school athletics as an institution that helps young people learn new life skills, develop strong values, and transcend cultural divides. These values and skills would help students perform better on the field or on the court, and they would also make students better prepared to navigate interpersonal and emotional challenges in other parts of their lives.
