The bill helps more people understand the climate, health, and environmental benefits of diets that involve plant-based protein sources, whether exclusively or just occasionally. The bill also ensures that public food programs provide access to plant-based protein sources—to those who want them. The bill: 1. Directs DCAMM to ensure that all state dining halls, cafeterias, and canteens provide at least one plant-based protein source with every meal. 2. Ensures that all culinary arts programs at public institutions of higher education provide instruction about plant-based protein sources. 3. Directs the Department of Elder Affairs to offer plant-based protein sources to low-income seniors who participate in the Senior Nutrition Program. 4. Makes increased awareness of and access to plant-based protein sources part of the purpose of the Massachusetts Food Trust Program. 5. Directs DESE to offer voluntary training and resources concerning plant-based protein sources to organizations participating in the National School Lunch Program and other food programs it oversees. Directs DESE, in awarding food-related grants, to consider whether proposals will increase awareness of and access to plant-based protein sources. 6. Ensures that state-approved Career and Technical Education Programs in culinary arts provide instruction about plant-based protein sources. 7. Gives WIC participants the right to request and receive food packages that reflect their preferences, if any, for plant-based protein sources. 8. Directs DESE to update the Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Framework to include information about plant-based protein sources.
