Event Description

Sixth meeting of the 21st Century Agriculture Commission to review both the Commonwealth’s existing framework and alternative models for supporting farms and farmers in preparing for, adapting to, and recovering from the impacts of climate change and natural disasters.

The 21st Century Agriculture Commission will host its sixth hearing on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, to explore the role of Massachusetts state government in supporting farms and farmers in preparing for, adapting to, and recovering from the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Invited speakers will testify on the effectiveness of federal and state programs that protect farms from the impacts of climate change, what Massachusetts could be doing better to ensure the climate resiliency of farms in the 21st Century, and provide examples of how other states are supporting their farms and farmers. The Commission will also receive a presentation on Healthy Soils and look at farms as a solution to climate change.

The hearing will feature testimony from the following invited speakers:

Rita M Thibodeau: Assistant State Conservationist for Programs with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
Phil Korman: Executive Director at Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) in Deerfield, Massachusetts
Emily Sampson: Environmental Policy Analyst with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL)
Rachel Jones & Hans Schmidt: External Affairs Director & Assistant Secretary of Resource Conservation at the Maryland Department of Agriculture
Keith Zaltzberg-Drezdahl: Managing Director & Head of Planning at the Regenerative Design Group Cooperative

This Commission meeting will be held virtually and livestreamed for the public via www.malegislature.gov.

Commission Members will receive testimony from invited groups and individuals only.
