Bill S.248 194th (Current)

An Act regulating surgical assistants

By Mr. Keenan, a petition (accompanied by bill, Senate, No. 248) of John F. Keenan and Paul W. Mark for legislation to license and regulate surgical assistants. Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure.

Bill Information

Presenter:
John F. Keenan
In 2019, the Board of Registration in Medicine required that the delivery of certain medical services be delegated only to those appropriately licensed. This prohibited surgical assistants from providing critical assistance such as inserting tubes, dressing wounds, and other pre- and post-operation care. This bill provides a path for surgical assistants to become licensed in Massachusetts. Once licensed, surgical assistants will be able to practice consistent with their education and training. This bill also establishes a Board of Registration of Surgical Assistants to regulate the field and practice of surgical assisting and review applications for licensing.
