Bill
An Act modernizing protections for consumers in automobile transactions
This legislation would add legal safeguards for residents who purchase used and leased cars in Massachusetts by creating four new consumer protections in the car buying process. The legislation would also expand the rights of car buyers who expect a purchased vehicle to be in a state of good repair and free of problems.
Highlights
- Expands Lemon Aid Law by providing consumers seven days from delivery date to inspect their vehicle and obtain a full refund if the vehicle fails.
- Increases surety bond amounts for used car dealers from $25,000 to $50,000
- Ensures people who lease a vehicle have the same rights to repossession notice as those who finance a vehicle.
- Increases used vehicle warranty to cover vehicles with up to 150,000 miles.
"By making targeted changes to the Commonwealth's consumer protection statutes, we are affirming our commitment to ensuring Massachusetts consumers are protected from unfair, deceptive and predatory tactics that can torpedo a family into financial ruin. I am particularly proud that the Senate has passed legislation I have filed to update Massachusetts used vehicle statutes and close existing loopholes in our laws that prevent the Attorney General from adequately protecting consumers during a used car purchase."
