Hearing Confirmed Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023 1:00 PM This is a meeting of the Commission on the Status of African Americans. The Commission on the Status of African Americans is a permanent commission enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives and established by Session Law (Acts 2020) Ch.253 part of an Act Relative to Justice, Equity and Accountability in Law Enforcement in the Commonwealth. This permanent commission consists of nine members, appointed by the Governor, Senate President, Speaker of the House, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People New England Area Conference. The nine members of the Commission are considered special state employees with three-year terms; they are residents of the Commonwealth who have demonstrated commitment to the African-American Community. The Commission on the Status of African Americans is charged with making policy recommendations based on research and analysis to the general court and executive agencies to ensure African Americans equitably benefit from and have access to government services and amend policies that have excluded African Americans. The Commission is intended to be a source of information on issues about African Americans, informing the public and leaders on the unique cultural, social, ethnic, economic, and educational issues, identifying and recommending qualified African Americans for appointive positions at all levels of government, assessing programs and practices in all state agencies using racial equity framework and monitoring executive-legislative action purported to eliminate systemic racism. The Commission will hold regular public meetings fact-finding hearings and other public forums as necessary.
