AN ACT DESIGNATING JUNE 14 AS THE BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY AND JUNE 9 AS GENERAL SYLVANUS THAYER DAY
Whereas, The deferred operation of this act would tend to defeat its purpose, which is to establish forthwith a day in June honoring General Sylvanus Thayer and the formation of the United States Army, therefore it is hereby declared to be an emergency law, necessary for the immediate preservation of the public convenience.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows:
Chapter 6 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 15RRRRR the following 2 sections:-
Section 15SSSSS. The governor shall annually issue a proclamation setting apart June 14 as United States Army Birthday Day, in recognition of the designation by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia to adopt the New England Militias around Boston on June 14, 1775 and the Congress further resolved to form a committee to bring in a draft of rules and regulations for the government of the Army; and in recognition of those who have served and those who are currently serving in the United States Army, Army Reserve and Massachusetts Army National Guard and recommending that the day be observed in an appropriate manner by the people.
Section 15TTTTT. The governor shall annually issue a proclamation setting apart June 9 as General Sylvanus Thayer Day, in recognition of the birth of Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General Sylvanus Thayer, also known as the Father of West Point, on June 9, 1785 in the town of Braintree and who was an early superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point and who was also an early advocate of engineering education in the United States and recommending that the day be observed in an appropriate manner by the people.
