Representative Alan Silvia is a lifelong resident of Fall River and a United States Marine Corps veteran. He served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from military service.
Representative Silvia earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and a Master of Science degree from Salve Regina University. He dedicated 21 years to the Fall River Police Department, where he served as a detective investigating major crimes and later worked in the Sexual Abuse Unit, focusing on crimes against children. His experience included interagency collaboration, crisis intervention, and court proceedings.
During his law enforcement career, Representative Silvia developed and implemented the SPEAK sexual abuse prevention program within the Fall River School District and provided community education on child abuse prevention, sexual assault, elder abuse, and substance abuse.
In addition to his professional career, Representative Silvia has an extensive record of civic involvement. He currently serves as President of the South End Neighborhood Association. His past service includes roles with the Child Protection Council, Citizens for Citizens, the Greater Fall River Alcoholism Council, the Greater New Bedford Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the Kennedy-Donovan Center Human Rights Committee.
