Senator Barbara L’Italien was first elected to the State Senate in 2014 after serving for 8 years in the house, from 2003-2011. Senator L’Italien was the Director of Government Affairs for State Treasurer Steve Grossman. Senator L’Italien is well known for her advocacy on behalf of the disability community, specifically in the area of Autism. She chairs the state-wide Autism Commission, which is composed of parents, medical professionals, teachers, advocates and Commissioners of State Agencies and has worked to make Massachusetts a nation-wide leader in Autism care. Senator L’Italien grew up in the Merrimack Valley and now represents Andover, Dracut, Lawrence and Tewksbury. She and her husband Kevin have four kids and live in Andover. Prior to being elected to the House of Representatives, she was a social worker specializing in elder care.
