Creating A Housing Office
Status
Law
An Act to create the executive office of housing and livable communities and to rename the Executive Office of Economic Development
To help tackle housing challenges head on, the Legislature created the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities. The new office reflects a hands-on approach to solving the housing shortage and affordability challenges that are putting pressure on too many residents and families. Secretary Edward M. Augustus was appointed by Governor Healey shortly after the Legislature passed the bill, and has spent his tenure partnering with cities and towns around Massachusetts to find housing solutions and bring down costs. The bill was signed into law on May 4, 2023.
Highlights
- Creates a state Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities, a cabinet-level position which will assist the Commonwealth with meeting its longterm goals in addressing the housing crisis and expanding safe, accessible, and affordable housing for residents.
- Elevates housing issues to a separate executive agency tasked with supporting housing availability and assessing the Commonwealth’s progress in this area.
"Governor Healey’s newly established Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities offers Massachusetts a clear steward in the mission to ensure dignified housing for all residents. We need a dedicated think tank for housing justice, generational wealth, and eradicating discrimination."
