An Act modernizing firearm laws
This legislation, supported by the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, sensibly addresses firearm violence through effective reform, to increase firearm safety in the state without infringing on the rights of gun owners.
Highlights
- Tackles the rise in untraceable “ghost” guns by requiring the registration and serialization of frames and receivers and updates our definition of firearm to include unfinished frames and receivers.
- Criminalizes discharging firearms at or near dwellings
- Expands the list of who may petition a court for an extreme risk protection order (ERPO) against a person who poses a risk of causing bodily injury to themselves or others beyond just household members and law enforcement, to include school administrators and medical professionals
- Prohibits the carrying of firearms on school buses, polling places, and certain government buildings with an exemption for law enforcement.
- Supports gun violence prevention in disproportionately affected communities.
- Updates how we define assault-style firearms, places new restrictions on large capacity feeding devices that are currently owned, and closes loopholes that allow the modification of legal firearms into illegal automatic weapons.
"This legislation reflects the input of many, including law enforcement officials, community advocates, gun owners, and healthcare workers. It provides the tools needed to better protect our residents from the epidemic of gun violence and to prevent future tragedies. With support from both chambers and the Governor’s signature today, Massachusetts can once again stand proudly by its record as a national leader on gun safety, and more importantly, we will save countless lives."
