AN ACT AUTHORIZING THE TOWN ADMINISTRATOR OF THE TOWN OF MILTON TO APPOINT THE POLICE CHIEF

     Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows:
     SECTION 1.  Chapter 272 of the acts of 1989 is hereby amended by striking out section 2 and inserting in place thereof the following section:-
     Section 2.  Notwithstanding section 97 of chapter 41 of the General Laws or any other general or special law to the contrary, upon the occurrence of a vacancy in the office of police chief in the town of Milton, the town administrator may fill the vacancy by appointing a police chief pursuant to a contract for a term of not more than 5 years. The appointment shall be made in accordance with town by-laws. Until the appointment of a police chief in accordance with these procedures, the town administrator may appoint a current sworn member of the police department of the town of Milton as acting police chief to fill a vacancy.
     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect upon its passage.
