AN ACT AUTHORIZING THE TOWN OF SAUGUS TO DESIGNATE A CHECK-OFF BOX ON ITS TAX BILLS FOR THE SAUGUS VETERANS RELIEF FUND

     Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows:
     The town of Saugus may, subject to the approval of the commissioner of revenue, designate on its municipal property tax bills or motor vehicle excise tax bills, or mail with those tax bills a separate form whereby taxpayers of the town may voluntarily check off, donate or pledge an amount of money, which shall increase the amount due and which shall be paid to the Saugus Veterans Relief Fund.
     The purpose of the Saugus Veterans Relief Fund is to provide support for Saugus veterans and their dependents in need of immediate assistance with food, transportation, heat and oil expenses. Saugus Veterans Services shall establish (i) an application process for veterans and their dependents to obtain assistance; (ii) standards for acceptable documentation of veteran status or dependent status; and (iii) financial eligibility criteria to determine need and the amount of assistance for eligible applicants. Saugus Veterans Services shall be responsible for reviewing each applicant and fairly applying these eligibility and level of need standards.
