AN ACT AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF BEVERLY TO CONTINUE THE EMPLOYMENT OF PAUL COTTER AS FIRE CHIEF.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows:

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, Paul Cotter, chief of the fire department of the city of Beverly, may be appointed and may continue to serve in the position of the fire chief of the city’s fire department until he reaches 70 years of age, until the date of his retirement or until the date he is relieved of his duties by the mayor, whichever occurs first; provided, however, that he is mentally and physically capable of performing the duties of his office. The city of Beverly, at its own expense, may require that Paul Cotter be examined by an impartial physician designated by the city to determine his mental and physical capability. No further deductions shall be made from the regular compensation of Paul Cotter under chapter 32 of the General Laws for any service subsequent to March 16, 2019, and, upon retirement, he shall receive a superannuation retirement allowance equal to that which he would have been entitled had he retired on March 16, 2019.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
