AN ACT AMENDING THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF AMESBURY TO INCREASE THE TERM OF THE MAYOR TO 4 YEARS.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

SECTION 1.  The charter of the city of Amesbury, which is on file in the office of the archivist of the commonwealth, as provided in section 12 of chapter 43B of the General Laws is hereby amended by striking out subsection (b) of section 2-1 of part II and inserting in place thereof the following subsection:-

(b)  Term of Office The mayor shall be elected for a term of 4 years beginning on the first city business day in January following the biennial city election and until a successor is qualified.

SECTION 2.  This act shall be submitted to the voters of the city of Amesbury at the next biennial city election in the form of the following question which shall be placed upon the official ballot to be used at the election:-

“Shall an act passed by the general court in the year 2021 entitled ‘An Act amending the charter of the city of Amesbury to increase the term of the mayor to 4 years’ be accepted?”

Below the question shall appear a brief summary of the act prepared by the city solicitor.

If the voters approve the question, this act shall be applicable to the city, but not otherwise.

SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect upon its passage.
