AN ACT AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF NEWBURYPORT TO CONTINUE THE EMPLOYMENT OF POLICE OFFICER CHARLES VORDERIS

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

SECTION 1.  Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary but subject to chapter 6E of the General Laws, Charles Vorderis, a police officer in the city of Newburyport, may continue to serve in that position until reaching the age of 70, the date of his retirement or the date he is relieved of his duties by the mayor of the city of Newburyport at the mayor’s discretion, whichever occurs first; provided, however, that he is mentally and physically capable of performing the duties of his position. The mayor of the city of Newburyport may, at the city's expense, require that Charles Vorderis be examined annually by a physician designated by the mayor to determine his physical and mental capability to perform the duties of his position. Charles Vorderis shall, while continuing to serve as a police officer of the city of Newburyport, comply with all requirements of chapter 6E of the General Laws, including: (i) maintaining certification and good standing with the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission; and (ii) complying with all in-service and other training requirements mandated by the municipal police training committee. No further deductions shall be made from the regular compensation of Charles Vorderis pursuant to chapter 32 of the General Laws for any service subsequent to the date on which he reaches the age of 65. Upon retirement, Charles Vorderis shall receive a superannuation retirement allowance equal to that which he would have been entitled had he retired on the date on which he reached the age of 65.

SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect upon its passage.
