AN ACT INCREASING THE TERM OF OFFICE FOR SELECT BOARD MEMBERS IN THE TOWN OF MARBLEHEAD FROM 1 YEAR TO 3 YEARS

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:        
         SECTION 1.  (a) Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the term of office for select board members in the town of Marblehead shall be increased from 1-year to 3-year staggered terms.
(b)  At the first annual town election to be held 1 year after the effective date of this act, the 5-member select board shall be elected. The 2 candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall each serve a 3-year term, the candidate receiving the third highest number of votes and the candidate receiving the fourth highest number of votes shall each serve a 2-year term and the candidate receiving the fifth highest number of votes shall serve a 1-year term.
(c)  At all subsequent elections, as the terms of select board members expire, successors to that office shall be elected for 3-year terms.

         SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect upon its passage.
