AN ACT PROVIDING FOR THE PROTECTION OF VOLUNTEER EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS FROM DISMISSAL.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows:

SECTION 1. Section 177B of chapter 149 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2010 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting after the word “department”, in lines 5 and 9, each time it appears, the following words:- or ambulance department.

SECTION 2. The second paragragh of said section 177B of said chapter 149, as so appearing, is hereby amended by striking out the first sentence and inserting in place thereof the following sentence:-
As used in this section, “responding to an emergency” shall mean responding to, working at the scene of or returning from a fire, rescue, emergency medical service call, hazardous materials incident or a natural or man-made disaster in the good faith belief that the action is necessary to prevent the imminent loss of life or property, where the emergency occurs during a period other than normal working hours of the employee.

SECTION 3. Said section 177B of said chapter 149, as so appearing, is hereby further amended by inserting after the word “firefighter”, in line 19, the following words:- or emergency medical technician.
